Learning in general, and language learning in particular, is a life-long endeavor. The course will examine current digital tools that can be used by individuals to customize learning, and by groups for collaborative learning. The history and development of English as a language will serve as an umbrella research topic throughout the course. Course Objectives: 1. Students will become familiar with personal digital tools and collaborative tools to enhance their learning and knowledge of English as a foreign language. 2. Students will become familiar with, how to find and evaluate, a variety of digital tools and web-based resources for learning English. 3. Students will use a variety of personal and collaborative digital tools to enhance their knowledge of the English language (e.g., history, development, use). INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR ENHANCING FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING 1

2 4. Students will develop skills to become independent language learners. Course Outline: 1. The computer/internet as a tool for learning English: Why, how and what? 2. The history and development of the English language 3. Search engine tools to access information 4. Criteria for website evaluation 5. Digital Tools (for customization and collaboration) 6. Websites for developing English language skills 7. Useful online resources for language study Methods of Teaching: Whole class activities, hands-on computer experience, class discussions, presentations, peer teaching Course Requirements: 1. Reading references chosen from the list below and on the class Moodle site. 2. Active participation throughout the course in the form of engagement and discussion in class and online (Moodle forums and blogs) 3. Reflection and engagement in authentic self assessment 4. Completion of short tasks throughout the course 6. Final Summing Up Task: Due June 22, 2014; final submission July INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR ENHANCING FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING 2
